Qualifications for Becoming a Member
The Northern California Psychiatric Society (NCPS) is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The APA is an organization composed of medical specialists who are qualified, or in the process of becoming qualified, as psychiatrists. To be eligible for membership in APA an individual must be a medical student or have completed a residency program in psychiatry accredited by the Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Applicants for membership in APA must also hold a valid medical license (with certain exceptions) and provide one reference who is an APA member.
The APA has a dual membership requirement whereby APA members must also be members of the district branch within whose jurisdiction they reside or practice. In order to practice medicine in California the state requires that physicians have a California Medical License. Therefore, to be eligible for NCPS membership you must have a valid California Medical License and reside or practice within the following counties (click image to enlarge):

Those wishing to become a member should fill out the proper application and send it, along with other necessary information, to the APA. After an applicant has been approved for membership in APA, his/her application is forwarded to the district branch office.
